At TaxFilers Way, we understand the nuances and intricacies of tax systems and are committed to ensuring our clients reclaim their unnecessary tax payments. One key aspect of this is ensuring that individuals who do not qualify for a Social Security Number (SSN) have the proper Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). Here's everything you need to know about the ITIN application process:

What is ITIN?

The ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) is a tax processing number issued by the IRS. It's essential for those who need to file taxes but don’t qualify for an SSN (Social Security number) from the Social Security Administration (SSA).

Duration

The ITIN application process takes approximately 8-9 weeks.

Mandatory Documents for ITIN Application

1. Original Passport
2. 1040 Tax returns
3. Form W7 (ITIN Application Form)
4. All your W2’s

How to Apply for an ITIN?

There are three ways to apply for an ITIN

Walk into the IRS Office

• Pre-booking an appointment is required.

• On the day of the appointment, the taxpayer should carry all four mandatory documents.

• Physical appearance of the applicant is mandatory when walking into the IRS office.

Certified Passport Copy

• Send all four documents to the IRS office for ITIN application.

• If sending your original Passport via post is a concern, you can opt for an Original Certified Passport Copy in place of the original passport. To get this, request the Indian Embassy to issue a Certified Passport Copy. We will provide a link to assist you with this.

IRS Authorized Agents

• This involves a video call with IRS authorized agents.

Note:Please note, TaxFilers Way does not offer this service.
